The Soldier’ s Story As a United States Soldier, one of the first things learned is the Soldiers’ Creed. The focus of the creed is loyalty, duty, and respect. The Warriors’ Creed is also found within this creed (in italics). The memorization of this statement of beliefs is mandatory and is learned during basic combat training. A soldier is expected to know and be ready to recite it during drills, formation, ceremonies, and upon request, but most importantly, a soldier is expected to live it. This essay is an account of a real-life experience of a United States Army soldier. Throughout this paper, I will refer to him as â€Å"the soldier.† Is this paper, I will discuss the soldier’s military service in relation to the Soldier’s Creed, how disability shifted his position as a soldier, how the shift revealed the Army’s practice of ableism, how the soldier’s current use of cyborg has eradicated him from the impairment of diabetes, thus moving him from disability to able-bodiedness, and lastly how cyborg could have salvaged his military career. From a phenomenological view, the soldier’s body as subject theorized how his body interacted with the world, acquired meaning and gained access in the world, specifically access to his successful military career. According to Merleau-Ponty, (as cited in Patterson and Hughes, 1999) â€Å" it is through the body that people gain access to the world† (p. 601). Sin is like an open sore that if left to fester will continue to grow worse not improve. Nathaniel Hawthorne examines this concept, as he seeks to connect with his reader. Many of his works revolve around a theme of sin and the effects it has on the mind, body, and soul. Sin is one of those permeating areas that has lasting consequences that affect all of life. Many characters in Hawthorne’s works go through their lives struggling as they try to cope with the guilt and shame associated with their actions. Some try to conceal their sin in order to avoid the consequences that will result, while others are seen outwardly suffering the consequences of their actions. Those who try to conceal their sin find that the inward consequences†¦show more content†¦On the other, they can choose to move on, without an open confession of the secret sin, and are haunted by that knowledge forever. Both The Ministers Black Veil and Young Goodman Brown are cases in point. At any rate, t hey will have to bear the burden of their guilt to their death even though they do not seem to believe that what they have done is sin.† (Georgieva 52) Each of Hawthorne’s characters present a different response to this dilemma. Some characters make the choice to conceal their sin, while others have that choice taken from them. When trying to understand his characters and some of the presuppositions that Hawthorne brings to the table, it is interesting to note that he utilizes Puritanism in many of his writings. The reader catches a glimpse of his struggle as he tries to fit together the seemly conflicting practices and beliefs of the Puritans. In the introduction, he gives what almost seems like a sense of duty to expose these inconsistencies. This presents an interesting aspect to the idea of sin and consequences. While he condemns the sin that occurred between Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmsdale, he gives the reader this overwhelming sense of sympathy toward them in a way that almost validates them—while condemning their sin. Hester Prynne is often cast aside. She sinned and then suffered the consequences of her actions. Although the humans were pushed out of Manor Farm that did notstop them from trying to take control again. It was unsuccessful. The farmanimals tried to build a windmill to supply them with electricity to cut down onmanual work. Humans tried to take it down with dynamite and the animals wouldhave to start all over again. The other was the conflict between Snowball andNapoleon who both wanted to lead. A vote proved Snowball to be leader butNapoleon had raised nine dogs and had them chase him out of the farm.
